Meet Teena “Dhyan” Summers

Dhyan started counseling individuals and couples in 1978, when she began her psychotherapy practice in Sonoma County, CA.  In 1982, she moved back to southern California where she was from, and practiced psychotherapy in Santa Monica until 2002.

She then moved to India to be closer to H.H. the Dalai Lama and other Buddhist teachers.  While there, she adopted a Tibetan child, Tashi who is now 24.  Dhyan credits her Buddhist practice with helping her to become more compassionate and insightful in her work with clients.  She also teaches mindfulness meditation to groups or individuals who request it,

Dhyan lived in India for 14 years, and is the owner/director of Expat Counseling and Coaching Services.  She continues to see expat clients around the world, remotely.

In 2015 Dhyan repatriated to Ashland, OR, where she became an Oregon licensed MFT.  She loves seeing clients from the Rogue Valley who share many of her values.  She also enjoys the clean air, beauty, and change of seasons which southern Oregon offers.  She lives here with her daughter and dog, Babu.

Along her journey she learned from many of the top expats in the field including Carl Rogers, Margaret Paul, Virginia Satir and Salvador Minuchen. Dhyan received training in family therapy, conjoint therapy for couples, EMDR, hypnotherapy, postive psychology, Cognitive Based Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy. She continues her training as a means of ensuring her methods are up – to – date and relevant to her clients. Her most recent trainings were in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and EMDR, a therapy to reduce the effects of trauma.

In 1978, Dhyan obtained licensing as a marriage and family therapist through the State of California. In 2015, upon moving to Oregon, she obtained an MFT license from Oregon as well.  Dhyan upholds the tenants of these licenses, particularly as they relate to professional conduct and confidentiality.
